Abstract

Cement production accounts for approximately 5–8% of global CO₂ emissions. The scale of this impact necessitates not only reducing the Portland clinker content in construction materials, but also identifying solutions that enable secondary CO₂ uptake during the service life of cement-based composites. Incinerated sewage sludge ash (ISSA), generated during mono-incineration at 850–900°C, is a potential mineral additive. This material is characterized by a stable chemical composition, fine particle size distribution, and the presence of poorly soluble Ca–Fe–Mg phases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of ISSA as an additive in cement mortars with respect to passive CO₂ sequestration and heavy metal stabilization. The research included chemical and mineralogical characterization (ICP-OES, ICP-MS, XRD and SEM-EDS), particle size analysis, leaching tests in accordance with PN-EN 12457-2, and assessment of the advancement of mineral carbonation under natural exposure conditions. The results show that ISSA contains 7-8 % of phosphorus, which occurs predominantly as whitlockite, which limits its bioavailability and reduces the economic feasibility of phosphorus recovery. At the same time, mortars incorporating ISSA exhibit high retention of heavy metals and environmental stability. In non-reinforced elements, carbonation does not pose a structural risk and may contribute to partial pore refinement through CaCO₃ precipitation, supporting secondary CO₂ uptake. Overall, the findings indicate that material use of ISSA is currently a more rational management pathway than phosphorus recovery.
