Abstract
Ultra High Performance Fibre Reinforced Cementitious composites (UHPFRC), also known as fibre-reinforced ultra-high-performance concretes, combine exceptional compressive strength and durability with controlled tensile behaviour governed by strain hardening. This enables a new design philosophy in which distributed fibre reinforcement can partially replace conventional reinforcing bars. However, the safe use of this mechanism requires understanding the material’s micro- and mesostructure to fully exploit its potential at the structural scale. This paper provides a brief overview of the material composition and classification of UHPFRC according to current European standards. Particular attention is given to its tensile behaviour, as well as durability aspects. The core of the paper focuses on the logic behind bending design of reinforced UHPFRC beams as structural elements combining conventional reinforcement with UHPFRC according to the Swiss standard SIA 2052 and the French National Annex NF P18-710 to Eurocode 2. These documents treat the fibre distribution as a function of element thickness somewhat differently, and they also differ in the degree of modelling freedom granted to designers, with SIA 2052 allowing more flexibility and NF P18-710 offering a more prescriptive approach. The main conclusion is that effective design of UHPFRC structural elements requires not only understanding the composite behaviour of the material but also rethinking structural form so that the fibre-reinforced cementitious matrix actively contributes to carrying tensile forces. The paper also emphasises that the development of an appropriate normative framework and the education of professionals are essential prerequisites for the wider adoption of UHPFRC technology in Poland.
